I was born in Larissa, a beautiful city in the Greek countryside. My childhood was calm surrounded by people who loved me and whom I loved. People who didn’t treat me differently because of who I was. “Who am I?”. I was just born with Thalassaemia. From the first years of my life I learnt to live with it. I was spending several hours in a hospital and I became accustomed to living with that. I never felt different. I was never treated in a different way and none ever made me feel uncomfortable. The most difficult thing was to accept and love myself. Having loved myself it was easier for others to love me too. Besides, I only had to go to the hospital sometimes…it wasn’t a tragedy after all...and I could skip school for a reason. All my friends know who I am. I have never kept it a secret. Why keep it a secret anyway? I have never felt different. All these years I never experienced medical problems. The biggest concern had always been iron chelation. The daily use of the pump (7 times a week) for 8 hours daily wasn’t a pleasant experience. I was just hoping that some day an effective but less painful way would be discovered to cover my iron chelation needs. And then it happened. My physician informed me that Ferriprox® was marketed. I am using it for 3 years and the needle nightmare is only limited to receiving blood transfusions. My life has become much easier. I can stay up late at night without having to think that when I go back I have to use the pump. I always carry my Ferriprox® in my purse. This way I never have to miss any dose. Not only has Ferriprox® managed to control my iron overload, it does it with no pain at all. And this is what I call salvation.
